My Approach to Psychotherapy

A secure, trusting, working relationship between therapist and client is key to successful therapy.

In the initial meeting clients and I discuss what brings them to therapy and how we will proceed. Therapy is a collaborative process and it is essential that there is a good fit between my clients and I and that they feel comfortable asking questions about the process they are about to engage in.

My training allows me to listen closely to how a client thinks about problems, responds to others, and operates unconsciously in ways that can undermine their intentions. Clients and I listen together for the images, ideas and feelings that help us undo the psychic blocks that keep them stuck--be it in depression, anxiety, relationship problems, or other symptoms.

Regardless of what brings us to psychotherapy or psychoanalysis, it is fundamentally about becoming more of who we are meant to be. As symptoms dissipate people discover new energy to focus on living more fully, not according to others expectations, but according to the meaning they want for their own lives.

Jungian Analysis

"Until you make the unconscious conscious, it will direct your life and you will call it fate."
C.G. Jung

The work of C. G. Jung (1875-1961), a Swiss psychiatrist, guides our everyday language; terms like complex, individuation and archetypal became popularized through his work. Jung had a keen understanding that myth and fairy tales were important psychological narratives and offered insight, as did dreams, into psychological life.

Work in analysis pays particular attention to the images, fantasies and dreams that are produced by the unconscious, and views them as material that is available to bring hidden parts of the psyche into our conscious self. Analytic work seeks to create balance between the demands of the outer world, and the demands of our inner world. It sees wholeness, rather than perfection, as the goal.

Clients interested in working analytically often work with dream material to deepen self-understanding. Analytic work understands that symptoms need to be understood, not merely eliminated, and listens for the wisdom of the inner Self.

Eye Movement Desensitization & Reprocessing — EMDR

EMDR is a treatment modality that focuses on specific trauma memories to diminish or eliminate symptoms such as flashbacks, depression, and hypervigilance. It is a method which tracks in a specific way the psychic material that emerges around stored traumatic memories. I am certified in Level I & II for EMDR.
